Nightjet Train – Paris to Vienna

The romance of overnight train travel in Europe is back, with the very cool named Nightjet, offered by the OBB (Austrian Federal Railways). Starting in December 2016, the OBB has introduced overnight train services from Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, and Holland directly into Austria, with great success. Rumour has it more Nightjet services are coming in the near future.

The Nightjet offers seating carriages, couchette carriages and of course private sleeping cabins both with and without private bathrooms.

We were lucky enough to be able to travel on the Paris to Vienna Nightjet service, we booked a 2-berth sleeper cabin without a private bathroom (They call it double compartment without shower).

Routing: Paris – Strasbourg – Karlsruhe – Munich – Salzburg – Linz – Vienna

Our Nightjet train departed Paris at 8 pm and arrived in Vienna the following day at 11.40 am (the train was approx. 2 hours late, with a few delays overnight), this was perfect for us as our hotel room was not ready until 2 pm.

When we entered our Nightjet train compartment, we were surprised by a waiting gift, which consisted of water bottle, face towel, pen, eye mask, snacks, and ear plugs. It was a nice and thoughtful touch from OBB – danke schon.

As you can imagine on any train, the sleeping compartment is very tight, ours had a set of bunk beds, small sink, opening window and table that folds out of the wall. The beds were remarkably comfortable, and we both slept well as the train journeyed through Europe. Bed mattress was soft, linens clean and pillow firm. There is a toilet and shower at the end of our carriage on the Nightjet train which is used by everyone that does not have a private bathroom, it was remarkably clean and tidy throughout the trip.

Breakfast is served in your compartment continental style, with fresh bread roles, cheese, ham, piping hot coffee and juice, a perfect way to start the way as we glide into Vienna.

I would highly recommend the Nightjet service, as it was a fun way to overnight and travel a vast distance at the same time. As a self-confessed train buff, I would always take a train rather than drive or fly. Nightjet get 10/10 from me.
