Countries in Pictures – Travel Talk Series
Traveling to world’s ancient countries through talks and rich collections of pictures
ANTARCTICAby Mr. Vincent WONG
Antarctica, the fifth largest continent in the world, is located at the southern-most part of the globe. Almost entirely covered by ice, it is the world’s highest, coldest and driest place which also contains the South Pole. Occurrences of aurora and midnight sun add to its mystery and so are the many different forms of ice, from huge ice sheets to glaciers and icebergs. Antarctic fauna including penguins, seals, whales, fishes and krill are most interesting. Rich in mineral resources such as coal and oil, the continent is still unspoiled by man through the protection of international treaties, but the environment is now feeling increasing pressure from growing tourism. The stories of early exploration are both exciting and sad even to this day. Recent melting of Antarctic glaciers due to global warming is now threatening the human race. All the above topics will be discussed in this presentation together with description of the sites that I have visited in the Subantarctic and Antarctic Peninsula.
Testimonials from participants of previous travel talks and study tours led by Vincent:
“I have learnt a lot on this subject!”
“Very comprehensive indeed. Thanks!”
“Very useful guide for my future trip!”
”Now what I have seen makes much more sense. Thank you!”
