The capital of the canton of Zürich is Zürich, which is also the largest city in Switzerland. It is situated in the northwest corner of Lake Zürich in north-central Switzerland. Zürich is a major hub for air, ground, and rail traffic. As of January 2020, the municipality had 434,335 residents, the urban area had 1.315 million, and the Zürich metropolitan area had 1.83 million. The biggest and busiest airport and train station in Switzerland are both located in Zurich.

Zurich has been continuously inhabited for more than 2,000 years and was established by the Romans under the name Turicum. Although this only demonstrates human presence in the region and not the existence of a town that early, early settlements have been discovered dating back more than 6,400 years. During the Middle Ages, Zürich attained the independence and privileged status of imperial immediacy and, in 1519, became a key hub of the Protestant Reformation in Europe under the leadership of Huldrych Zwingli.

Although Zürich’s most spoken language is Zürich German, a regional dialect of the Alemannic Swiss German language, German is the city’s official language.
