We’re watching a very entertaining samurai performance in front of Nagoya castle in Japan.

I was overjoyed when I discovered that the magnificent Nagoya castle had a live samurai show inside the castle grounds.

These actors here play Samurai warlords, Army Generals and soldiers who united Japan during the Edo period 400 years ago and used Nagoya castle as their fort.

And as you expect there is acrobatic sword fights in authentic heavy costumes, there’s audience participation, comedy and stirring music.

I didn’t really expect the dancing – but hey these guys are very well rehearsed – as this ensemble perform the same roles at night in a professional theatre.

Unfortunately no English is spoken during the show – but the idea is pretty clear. These famous, well-known warriors are highly respected in Japanese history – and the 20 minute show is a perfect introduction to discovering the delights of the Nagoya Castle afterwards.
