Climbing mount Fuji in Japan for sunset and sunrise was a truly amazing hike.

We started out around 1pm to reach the summit in time for sunset. The path up Mt. Fuji was very easy to follow. There are a lot of other climbers on the route, it would be very difficult to get lost hiking on this trail. There are also basic food and accommodation options at the different stations on the way up Mount Fuji.

After watching the sunset, we planned on going back down to the 9th station to sleep. However, it was getting late and despite what we had heard back in Fujiyoshida, it was possible to stay in dorms at the top. It was too late by now to eat but with the few snacks and the vending machines (yes there are vending machines on top of Mt Fuji!) we had enough to get us through until breakfast.

At 4am, we woke on the summit with the other people climbing Mt. Fuji to catch the incredible sunrise. The surrounding countryside, stretching out for miles slowly lit up as the suns rays started stretching out. It was cold but worth avery second as the views were mindblowing. The sun rose slowly and once it was fully delight, we walked around the circumference of the crater.

At the summit is Japan’s highest post office where those climbing Mt. Fuji can send postcards home. Hiking around the crater, we walked the extra few steps to the ‘true summit’ at the weather station on the far side of Mt. Fuji.

After hanging around the crater at the summit for a while it was time to begin the long, dusty descent of Mt. Fuji and head back towards Fujiyoshida, our climb of Mt. Fuji for sunset and sunrise a complete success. ☺
