WE KNOW CONVENIENCE STORES IN JAPAN ARE GREAT!! But how exactly did 7/11 grow to become Japan’s TOP convenience store from one store in a factory town? Let’s find out and examine exactly HOW their rise to the top happened.

I LOVE CONVENIENCE STORESSSS like any person who lives in Japan!! So, I decided to make a video specifically talking about Japan’s top konbini 7/11 (even though it’s not really my favorite lol) and look at exactly HOW they came to be the number one convenience store. This is pretty different than my usual videos but I hope it’s interesting 🙂

How 7/11 Took Over Japan

  1. You was brilliant explaining the history off 7,11 . Only one's I been to is Australia and Singapore. Not here in the U.K. 🎄☃️❄️

  2. more of these please. i like how you did a lot of good research and presented a deep-dive on a particular topic in japanese culture.

  3. I remember talking about konbini during one of your live premieres 🙂 I kinda love this topic lol

  4. This was a history lesson I didn't know I needed or wanted and somehow found myself not able to turn away

  5. I really like that Lawson has introduced a bunch of stores called "Natural Lawson" where they sell mostly vegan products. As someone with dietary restrictions around eating animal products, it's great how much variety/tasty the food is at the Natural Lawsons. Would be cool if 7/11 did something like that too.

  6. Really interesting video! I would love to see some more videos from you in this format if this is something you enjoy making!
As for 7-Eleven, we have them in Australia, but they are far inferior to Japan's 7-Eleven 😆

  7. Not sure whats scary about 7-11 in the US, sure maybe the quality isn't the best but it not like they try to steal your soul that's Starbucks job.

  8. I really enjoyed how concise and informative this video was. Please continue to make more videos like these!

  9. Loved it! I’d love to see more similar videos. If you can work in an explanation of why public bathrooms in Japan often lack soap/a way to dry hands, even better 😂

  10. I come from Australia. 7-11 is well enough known in Melbourne and is mostly attached with petrol stations in Perth. So when I was in Japan, I preferred to go there rather than Lawson or Family Mart. Plus, it was convenient for the international ATM machine.

  11. I always enjoy your videos… this one is a bit different, kind of documentary style- you did a great job of making it really interesting! Who knew I was so fascinated by 7-11 😂 Great video ❤

  12. this was so fun! i was just thinking about this very topic the other day!!
excited to get a 7-11 feast when i visit tokyo in feb for the first time in 3 years x

  13. Best moment: “I’m glad they didn’t get their way – then we’d have no 7/11! pause to arrange hair What a nightmare!” The sass 💁‍♀️

  14. 前はAMPMもけっこうあったけど、いつの間にか無くなった。アメリカにはまだありますか?

  15. Whenever I visit my friend in Florida, I make her take me to Wawa basically every day…sometimes more than once a day, LOL. The soft pretzels…! I bought several to give my brother and sister when I went home, but they actually got moldy before I was able to give them out–which to me means, there are NO preservatives in the pretzels. It was kinda sad, but also nice to know.

  16. I'll never forget–when I first moved to Japan, my American coworker (and we later came to despise each other) told me that sometimes he just "bought something for dinner at the conveni." All my American brain could picture was those sad greasy hotdogs rolling endlessly and I thought, "That is pathetic." But yep, later I came to see that he was right and I was wrong! Maybe 10 haro-haro's and 20 onigiri's later…

  17. You researched the heck outta this! Thanks for your hard work–I learned a lot.
Incidentally, my fave conveni item ever was(is?) sold at Lawson (I'm pretty sure). It was a seasonal item. It was rolled up like a burrito, but the ingredients were a wonderfully soft yellow cake, nama cream, and fresh sliced strawberries. In all the time I lived in Japan, I actually never took advantage of the bill-paying, ticket-buying options. I just bought food there. I esp loved when the drinks would have a campaign where you could get a little toy with your tea or soda. I have a collection of little jade teddy bears and another collection of tiny Nissan cars that I got for "free."

  18. It's funny how no one gives a crap about 7/11 here in the States. Anyway, great presentation, Allison! I majored in Marketing and I gave a presentation about Sam's Club and Walmart just like yours in school. LOL.

  19. Thank you. This is a quite interesting review of 7/11 and I learned a lot. But I must say the chop, chop, chop editing makes it difficult to watch.

  20. Wow and to think here in Western Australia we got our first 7-11 in 2014. I would've never thought it had been around so long

  21. I think we don't have convenience stores here (Spain), at least they're not popular, they're not a "thing" here, not that I've heard of. I think the closest thing we have is gas station shops (?). You know, we have lots of gas stations everywhere. That's why I think the pokémon centers in the new game are literally gas stations. And they always have a little shop with the essentials. P.S: Ok, I've researched, and yes, this gas station shops can be considered conveniences stores, and apart from that we have very little. In any case, they don't have a portion of the services that the japan ones offer, not convenient at all. So I'm looking forward the day I finally go to Japan to experience this 😀

  22. I live in the USA and there are only three convenience stores in the entire county. They’re all 7-11. I have never been to any of them.

  23. familymart and lawsons is my favorite, though honestly if a 7-11 is closer then its 7-11. convenient stores are way too convenient, to the point i simply went to one for meals instead of a restaurant… i do feel a bit guilty that i barely went to a restaurant this time around though it was on my own choice. you need a will of iron to avoid the convenience store when in japan an go to actual restaurants…

  24. I just saw Mikan’s video of convenience stores in Japan 😂
I’m still fascinated that Japan takes the word “convenience” literally 😂

  25. When I first went to Japan I got hooked on Family Mart and I didn’t bother with 7/11 as i related that as a US shop at the time. Later I realised 7/11 was better in Japan but I still liked going into Family Mart.
On my last trip there was a Natural Lawsons across the road from my hotel so I ended up going there every day 🤣.

  26. Family Mart is the best one because they have this nice lil tune. That being said, you're right, the best one is the one closest to you. On a different note, your hair looked amazing in this video and the middle parting suits you very well!

  27. This is a great research video. I never thought I would be so engaged in a video about convenience stores that wasn’t just showing me food.

  28. Very nice video, I do feel however that you skipped a very important and very groundbreaking moment in the 7/11 history. The same concept of huge 2L. washing machine powder , and 3L. big jugs of juice did not work in Japan, so they changed the whole business concept, to be small packed, and they would try to cover all the needs of anyone in the area. The delivery of fresh goods to 7/11 is also due to a Japanese input to the american concept. The reason why so many 7/11 shops are so close to each other, is to make it easier to restock fresh goods. This is how the japanese shops sometimes change their fresh food selections, 3 to 4 times a day. One small delivery truck was able to restock several shops at one time during the day, and this is what made the concept so outstanding and successful. The whole management catalog for Japan was also rebranded, from the original American one. In other words, by the time 7/11 actually became popular in Japan, it had already changed significantly from the american version.

Thank you for a nice video…

  29. 7/11は高いね。おにぎり178円、ピーナッツ1袋240円は スーパーの2倍くらいだよ。 ところで東大のコンビニは何?7/11?

  30. Wonderful video! I learned a lot. I lived in Hong Kong and 7-11 was king there too, likewise with Taiwan and Thailand when I visited. First off I have to say after going back to the USA I worry I'll probably get stabbed at most 7-11s here. The food is garbage too except for slurpees. 7-11 in Asia would sell hard liquor and a lot more alcohol which made my 21 year old self very happy, haha. It also feels like in the states, 7-11 lacks much of a location advantage. I could usually get to a supermarket in the same time (or less time) than it took to get to a 7-11 and the supermarket would usually have the same drinks or snacks for less (plus real food I'd actually eat)

  31. 7/11 has the best coffee alongside Lawson, and it also has the best atms… but Lawson has the best food and desserts by far!😌Fingers crossed Lawson dominates the other two conbinis one day… -from someone who has a Lawson right next to her apartment haha😝
