Nara is located less than one hour from Kyoto and Osaka. To-dai-ji ”the great eastern temple” is one of Japan’s most famous and historically significant Buddhist temples. It’s the main attraction of Nara. Its Great Buddha Hall , houses the world’s largest bronze statue of the Buddha known as Daibutsu in Japanese. Until recently this was the largest wooden building in the world
The temple also serves as the Japanese headquarters of the Kegon school of Buddhism. The temple is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara”, together with seven other sites including temples, shrines and places in the city of Nara.
There were many massive columns in the 320-year-old “Hall of the Great Buddha” , but one amongst them was quite special. Many of the guide books and guides here say that if one is able to fit through the hole in that column, he will achieve enlightenment.
Deer, regarded as messengers of the gods in the Shinto religion, roam the grounds freely. Deer biscuits are also available in the shops around .These Deer have their antlers removed so they are harmless. But I was still scared as they were almost as tall as me.
There are so many souvenir shops here- for deer doll, books, sweets and snacks.
