Asia's Worst Tour Guide | Bald and Bankrupt (Hanoi to Dong Hoi)
After recovering from a crash on our first day in Vietnam, the rain came pouring down. I got lost from my fellow travelers @baldandbankrupt and @BackpackerBen on the road. We ended the day seeking refuge in a bus.
Now this is getting your feet wet in a tried & true style of real life elemental living. I just love seeing the roads of all rural and urban cultures located in every hemisphere and on every continent dominated by genuinely happy, friendly and authentic smiles on people moving through life on scooters, small motorbikes. bicycles and on foot.. Instead of roads being packed with bloated supersized pickup Trucks ( manly yank tanks), bling embellished luxury SUVs and Toyota taxi's, As seen with the daily bumper to bumper clusterf-k of merging morons on the American autobahn, Buses are exempt from my harsh critique because they are the basic means & mainstay to get around by the elderly, the children & families with their chickens & groceries, as well as all the scooter less souls, all who ride share in a more practical user & eco friendly & socially accessible way of transporting people in the mass. Its amazing to see how the inner city traffic flows so fluid in such mass density riding or driving with no signal/ traffic lights, no well defined lanes or traffic conductor/ maestro, yet everything keeps moving until everyone stops and the opposing directional mass of traffic takes its turn. like an intuitive 2nd nature of courtesy during organized chaos. Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos as well as all of South Asia & the island nations are so beautiful & diverse. Even after decades of war & occupation with all the atrocities that go with,,the involuntary submission to various empires and regimes that came and went The destruction of so much not so long ago, and still the people are welcoming, friendly and happy to see & meet you. A.tolerant resilience with dignity that's unsurpassed, even totally lacking in 1st world countries. Poor backpacker Ben, seems like a fish out of water at times,, especially when trying to control a little scooter..
Imagine being a young american soldier totally lost in the hills of the vietnamese interior. Cold, soaking wet, and exhausted with snipers taking pot shots at you while your trying to find your bearings and no clear objective. It's not hard to imagine why so many of them became disillusioned and just went into survival mode. Great content, Tim! I'm fascinated by this trip through Vietnam
Hi Tim, am a Bald & Bankrupt fan πI do like your content as well. Looking forward for next episodes but please put some warmer clothes! Am cold just seeing you πHave a great journey π
Tim you should do the mountain side of Northern Luzon, Philippines. The roads are not always smooth but the scenery will compensate for the discomforts. Do it in summer time, the scenery will be just amazing.
I got food poisoning taking the public owned train from Da Nang (little further south of Dong Hoi) to Hanoi. I didn't get much sleep as the trains are a bit outdated. And the fumes from the diesel engine gave me a headache. It was a long 18 hours. If there is a next time, I'll take the bus.
I dislike that little Ben, either he is joking or not, i didnt like what he said, 3 days i was in Japan the clean country in the world and now…, but you and big Ben i really enjoy both of you and you guys a positive, keep it up Tim, θ°’θ°’
