岡山城・岡山後楽園の紅葉絶景！ / Autumn Leaves at Okayama Castle and Okayama Korakuen Garden! 【2022年11月リニューアルオープン】

岡山市の中心部にある「岡山城」と「岡山後楽園」の紅葉風景をご紹介します！
（※岡山城天守閣は2021年6月から大規模改修のため休館していましたが、2022年年11月にリニューアルオープンしました）

■岡山城 ( 11月中旬～12月上旬 )
岡山城（おかやまじょう）は、岡山市の中心部にある城郭跡で、「日本100名城」の一つに数えられます。岡山城の天守閣の外観は黒漆塗の下見板が特徴的で、カラスを連想させる印象から別名「烏城」（うじょう）とも呼ばれます。

岡山城は明治維新後の廃城で、御殿（ごてん）・櫓（やぐら）・門の大半が取り壊され、さらに太平洋戦争の空襲で天守を焼失しました。現在の天守は1966年に鉄筋コンクリートにて再建され、江戸時代から現存する月見櫓・西之丸西手櫓は国の「重要文化財」に指定されています。
旭川と共に、天守・月見櫓を望む景観が素晴らしく、「川面に映える漆黒の金烏城（きんうじょう）」と称えられます。

■岡山後楽園 ( 11月中旬～12月上旬 )
後楽園（こうらくえん）は、岡山市の中心部にある日本庭園（大名庭園）で、岡山城に隣接しています。水戸の偕楽園、金沢の兼六園と並び「日本三名園」の一つに数えられ、国の「特別名勝」に指定されています。

岡山城は戦国期に宇喜多氏が近世城郭へと拡張整備しましたが、「関ヶ原の戦い」で西軍の主力となったために流刑となり、代わって小早川秀秋が城主となりますが、2年後に急死し、その後、池田氏が岡山藩を引き継ぎました。

後楽園は江戸時代初期に岡山藩主・池田綱政によって造営され、14年の歳月をかけ1700年（元禄13年）に完成しました。藩主が賓客をもてなす延養亭（えんようてい）を中心とした池泉回遊式の庭園で、岡山城や周辺の山々を借景としています。

後楽園は広い芝生地や、池、築山、亭舎が園路や水路で結ばれ、歩きながら移り変わる景色を満喫できるよう工夫された庭園で、ミシュラン・グリーンガイドでも三ツ星に認定されています。

■Okayama Castle ( Mid-November to early December )
Okayama Castle is a castle ruin located in the center of Okayama City and is one of the “100 Best Castles in Japan”. The exterior of Okayama Castle’s Tower is characterized by black lacquered clapboards, and is also known as the “Crow Castle” because of its crow-like appearance.
(*Okayama Castle Tower was closed for major renovations from June 2021, but reopened in November 2022.)

Most of the Goten, turrets, and gates of Okayama Castle were demolished when the castle was abandoned after the Meiji Restoration (1868-1889), and the castle keep was destroyed by fire in an air raid during the Pacific War (1945). The current castle tower was rebuilt with reinforced concrete in 1966, and the Tsukimi Yagura and Nishinomaru Nishite Yagura, which have existed since the Edo period, are designated as national “Important Cultural Properties.
The view of the castle tower and the moon-viewing turrets along with the Asahikawa River is magnificent, and is called “the jet-black Golden Crow Castle reflected on the surface of the river.

■Okayama Korakuen Garden ( Mid-November to early December )
Korakuen Garden is a Japanese garden (feudal lord’s garden) located in the center of Okayama City, adjacent to Okayama Castle. It is one of the “Three Great Gardens of Japan” along with Kairakuen in Mito and Kenrokuen in Kanazawa, and is designated as a “Special Place of Scenic Beauty” by the government.

The Okayama Castle was expanded and improved into a modern castle by the Ukita clan during the Warring States period, but was exiled after becoming the main force of the Western Army in the “Battle of Sekigahara” (1600).
Kobayakawa Hideaki took over as lord of the castle, but died suddenly two years later, and the Ikeda clan then took over the Okayama domain.

Korakuen Garden was built in the early Edo period by the feudal lord of Okayama, Tsunamasa Ikeda, and was completed in 1700 after 14 years of construction. It is a garden with a pond and fountain garden system centering on Enyo-tei, where the feudal lord entertained his guests, with Okayama Castle and the surrounding mountains as its backdrop.

Korakuen Garden has a large lawn, ponds, mountains, and pavilions connected by paths and waterways, and was awarded three stars by the Michelin Green Guide for its garden design, which allows visitors to enjoy the changing scenery as they walk around.
