  1. One thing I’ll add about suica/pasmo app on phone. It works great but it turns out you cant add money to it if you’re using Visa. MC/Amex will work fine but not Visa for some reason, even tho I was able to initially create it and add money thru suica app with Visa. I couldn’t add more money with a Visa card. So weird but others found this same issue.

  2. I prefer signing up for an international day plan. With ATT in the USA it's only $10/day and I use my phone as I normally would without a data cap. Those mobile hotspots don't give you much data before throttling πŸ™

  3. I always get some money from my bank before going. You get mid market exchange rate. If you need to get it in Japan the convenience store atms are the most reasonable but still more expensive that getting it at home

  4. My november japan 1st time trip
    1. Filled out vjw making sure all is fullfilled, only brought handcarry – less than 30mins clearing customs and immigration
    2. Bought vending data only sim using secondary mobile phone
    3. Tokyo is ok to just wing simple conversations. And they use translation app. For more fulfilling conversations and trip – i recommend learning enough
    4. Use gmaps to the T. But sometimes entrance to certain lines not displayed coughUenotokyolinecough. Also be extra wary when navigating out of stations to your destinations it can get confusing on your orientation
    5. I avg 10km daily walking in just tokyo – also yes buy umbrella. So not good for families or old people
    6. For tokyo metro trip just Buy suica and if possible get a passmo as well for insurance
    7. Exchanged yen before flight – saved time. Still king. Though above 100million yen you need to declare at customs. Bring global cc as well that can do both mcard and visa merchants just incase

  5. Hey Alex, I wanted to add a potential 3rd option for those with certain mobile phone plans. If you go through AT&T or Verizon, they have unlimited international data for $10 per day, which caps at $100. At&t went through local Softbank towers and gave me better performance than my mobile wifi. * I see someone else mentioned this as well. lol

  6. Great stuff Harb πŸ˜€ I certainly know about soggy sneakers in Japan 😹 last time I was prepared

  7. The Japan travel app for navigating the train system is a great alternative for google maps! I used it for the 2 weeks i was there and it saved me plenty of times πŸ‘πŸ˜‚

  8. Google maps is a lifesaver. You are so right though – you need to make sure the departure time matches the train. Sometimes we would set it up early to see how long it would take to travel and we ended up on the wrong train. When you get it right it is amazing – tells you what train number to board for faster exit and where to exit as well. I don't know how we did Japan before this. We used to print out paper maps and wing it πŸ™‚

  9. Are there places where if I take USD cash I can exchange for YEN? instead of having to use my card

  10. Great advice for language! Also bring a notepad so that you can write down what you are saying, people can read a lot better than they can listen!

  11. To note with rental SIM and portable WiFi, services like Docomo will throttle you without notice if you have a heavy data user you're sharing the data with. My gphotos uploaded all of my photos when I was sleeping during my overnight stay in Kyoto and in the morning, I was throttled hard. Thankfully Google Fi helped but if is your lifeline, be very careful if you have a data hog with you or data draining app.
