Hello! Everyone understands how important for humans is access to clean drinking water. Today we can see how people appreciate this treasure. If you want to see the place where the oldest waterworks in Japan are currently operating, come with me for a walk! This small pond is supplied with incredibly pure spring water through exactly the same system for 250 years!

The name of place we are visiting today is Todoroki Suigen. This is a pond with spring water located in Kumamoto prefecture, on the island of Kyushu. This water spring is one of “Three Great Springs in Higo” (Historically, Kumamoto prefecture was called Higo Province). In 1664 a clay pipeline was constructed from the spring to the town. In 1771 the waterworks was restructured with stones and this 5km stone water pipeline still works today. That makes this place the oldest active waterworks of Japan. 6,000 tons of water flow through this spring every day and anyone can drink this water free. This is a real happiness to have this possibility.

May happiness be with this place.
