Living in the Shadows of a Volcano
Kagoshima City is the administrative, economic, and cultural center of Kagoshima Prefecture and is a castle town dating back to the 14th century. The city and its suburbs are located on the northeastern part of Satsuma Peninsula and face the Kagoshima Bay, which is more commonly known as Kinko Bay.

The smoking Sakurajima centered in Kinko Bay is one of the main symbols of Kagoshima Prefecture. Throughout history Sakurajima (4 km from central Kagoshima City) has been the site of multiple massive eruptions and continues to be one of the most well-known active volcanos in the world. Sakurajima was originally an isolated island however, as a result of the eruption of 1914, the island was joined to the adjacent Osumi Peninsula. The leva fields can still be seen on the island as testament to the history of the volcano’s eruptions. – Japan Tourism
