Harajuku Station is characterised by its retro station building, which you would never guess from its fame, but what will happen to the current station building?
I photographed Harajuku Station while on an errand in the neighbourhood.

Historical value of Harajuku Station
The current station building was completed in 1924 and is the oldest existing wooden station building in Tokyo. The building is a two-storey structure with a British-style design, with a steepled roof and white exterior walls [2]. The window grids have a double diagonal lattice pattern and the disused rails used on the staircase are stamped 1950.

As it was not designed by a famous architect, its value as a structure, other than its antiquity, does not seem to have been recognised, and it has not been declared an important cultural property.

However, it has been recognised as one of the 100 best stations in the Kanto region. The approval seems to have been granted by the Kanto Transport Bureau of the Ministry of Transport, but is the new station building so necessary that its value should be abandoned?

The stained glass is not flashy, but it is nice and austere.

I think it is the gap between Harajuku, which is at the forefront of fashion, and this station building that is so wonderful for country people like me and visitors from abroad.

In fact, many foreign tourists were taking photos of the station scenery on the day.

Why are you building a new station building?
As mentioned at the beginning of this article, the reason for building a new station building seems to be that Harajuku Station is close to the Olympic venues and is expected to be crowded.

Harajuku Station is the 62nd busiest station in the JR East area, with approximately 70,000 passengers per day. This is not a small number, but if the number includes the number of visitors to Meiji Shrine at the beginning of the year, the station does not boast such a large number of passengers.

However, another reason for rebuilding the station is undoubtedly the age of the facilities.
In fact, there are areas everywhere where the old age cannot be concealed.

Some of the walls are also peeling. It must be very expensive and labour intensive to maintain this old station.

However, I think the oldness is part of the beauty of Harajuku Station, and as JR is a for-profit organisation, it is inevitable that they have to focus on profitability, but it is a pity.
