This time, our hosts visited Beppu City in Oita Prefecture.
In addition to reaching Beppu from Tokyo, Osaka, and more via connecting planes, highway buses, airport shuttle services, and trains, ferry cruises are becoming a popular way to travel at a slow, leisurely pace.
Ferry Sunflower is a night-time ferry service that runs between Osaka and Beppu.
The trip takes 12 hours one way, and if you leave in the evening and arrive the next morning, you’ll be using your travel time more effectively!
The ferry has many different guest rooms onboard, ranging from reasonably-priced private rooms for single travelers to deluxe cabins for ultimate relaxation.
You can soak in a spacious tub in a scenic bathhouse while taking in ocean views, or relish the fresh sea breeze on the observation deck while viewing the islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
From January 13, 2023, the brand new ferry Sunflower Kurenai will become the first ever LNG-fueled ship in Japan, while its twin Sunflower Murasaki will enter service in April, 2023, both running from Osaka to Beppu.
They have earned the highest energy conservation rating for domestic vessels from the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and will provide environmentally-friendly casual cruises.
Next, our hosts experienced the local traditional art of Beppu bamboo crafting in Beppu City.
This ancient craft was recorded in the Nihon Shoki, a historical chronicle from the Nara Period (710 – 794), showcasing its profound legacy, and even today small shops specializing in bamboo crafting continue to dot the hot spring town.
The craftspeople mainly use “madake” bamboo, of which Beppu boasts the highest output in Japan.
Up to 200+ different bamboo weaving techniques are all performed by hand, yielding crafts brimming with warmth born from the wisdom and skill of the craftspeople.
At the Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Craft Center are displays introducing its history alongside pieces by renowned craftspeople.
They also offer workshops, allowing visitors to experience weaving their own bamboo bells, flower baskets, and more.

Oita Prefecture also produces the most shiitake mushrooms in Japan, and the shop Yamayoshi specializes in selling top-quality local shiitake mushrooms.
In addition to dried shiitake mushrooms, you can enjoy exquisite shiitake mushrooms & pork bowls and even eat soft-serve ice cream flavored with shiitake mushrooms.
