Kankakei Gorge is located on Shodoshima Island and is very famous for its autumn leaves, especially those that can be seen in fall.
Three of the most beautiful valleys in Japan have been designated, and Kankakei is one of the three.
I visited Kankakei Gorge on November 28, 2022.
What I found disappointing in shooting this video was that on November 28, the foliage on the top of Kankakei Gorge had already begun to wither.
So if you want to enjoy the autumn leaves on the summit, it is best to visit before mid-November.
If you visit Kankakei Gorge in late November, you should be able to enjoy the autumn leaves blooming around Koun Station, which is located at the foot of Kankakei Gorge. However, Kouun Station is located at a lower elevation, so you will not be able to enjoy the view.
How to get to Kankakei Gorge
The Shodoshima Olive Bus is a good choice. The Shodoshima Olive Bus runs through the ports of Tonosho, Ikeda, and Sakade, making it very convenient.

If you are taking the Shodoshima Olive Bus, go to “Kusakabe Port”.
After arriving at the “Kusakabe Port” bus stop, visitors can transfer to a bus on the “Kankake Line.”
The “Kankake Line” bus will take you to the ropeway station, Kouun Station.
And if you take the Shodoshima Olive Bus, you can conveniently pay with electronic money such as Suica or Ikoka, which can be used in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya.
Additionally, if you are planning to ride the Kankakei Ropeway, you can pay by credit card.
