Visited Yudanaka in Nagano, Japan, in mid-December to pay a visit to the famous snow monkeys. We had a five hour journey from Shin-Osaka to Nagano JR Station, with a transit at Tokyo station, via the Shinkansen. We then proceeded to transfer to the Nagano Electric Railway for the snow monkeys make our way to Yudanaka, where we stayed in a traditional Ryokan for two nights. The hotel provided two way transport to Jigokudani Monkey Park. Sadly, there was no snow that day so we trekked the 1.6km trail in mud. Similarly, since there was no snow, the monkeys were found running around the onsen area instead of enjoying their soak in the onsen (where they are often depicted in photographs).
