Suidosuji is a shopping area in Kobe Nada-ku, between Sannomiya and Rokko and I took an evening walk to see closed shops and the streets without so many people.

▶ Kobe (from Wikipedia)
Kobe is Japan’s seventh-largest city after Kawasaki, the third-largest port city after Yokohama, and the capital city of Hyōgo Prefecture. It is located on the southern side of the main island of Honshū, on the north shore of Osaka Bay and about 30 km (19 mi) west of Osaka. With a population around 1.5 million, the city is part of the Keihanshin metropolitan area along with Osaka and Kyoto.
Kobe was one of the cities to open for trade with the West following the 1853 end of the policy of seclusion and has since been known as a cosmopolitan and nuclear-free zone port city. While the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake diminished much of Kobe’s prominence as a port city, it remains Japan’s fourth-busiest container port. Companies headquartered in Kobe include ASICS, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, and Kobe Steel, as well as over 100 international corporations with Asian or Japanese headquarters in the city, such as Eli Lilly and Company, Procter & Gamble, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Nestlé. The city is the point of origin and namesake of Kobe beef, the home of Kobe University, as well as the site of one of Japan’s most famous hot spring resorts, Arima Onsen.
Wedged between the coast and the mountains, the city of Kobe is long and narrow. To the east is the city of Ashiya, while the city of Akashi lies to its west. Other adjacent cities include Takarazuka and Nishinomiya to the east and Sanda and Miki to the north.
The landmark of the port area is the red steel Port Tower. A ferris wheel sits in nearby Harborland, a notable tourist promenade. Two artificial islands, Port Island and Rokkō Island, have been constructed to give the city room to expand.
Away from the seaside at the heart of Kobe lie the Motomachi and Sannomiya districts, as well as Kobe’s Chinatown, Nankin-machi, all well-known retail areas. A multitude of train lines cross the city from east to west. The main transport hub is Sannomiya Station, with the eponymous Kobe Station located to the west and the Shinkansen Shin-Kobe Station to the north.
Mount Rokkō overlooks Kobe at an elevation of 931 m (3,054 ft). During the autumn season, it is famous for the rich change in colors of its forests.

▶ Suidosuji (translated from suido-suji)
In the Taisho era, a water pipe was run from Nishinomiya to Kobe, and a road was built over it,
eventually becoming a city called “Suido-suji”.
When people gather, shops also gather, and it has developed as one of Kobe’s leading commercial districts with more than 500 shops. With 8 shopping streets and 4 markets narrowly connected from east to west, you can enjoy shopping and dining in a nostalgic warm atmosphere that you cannot experience in a large shopping zone.
In the Taisho era, when water was drawn into Kobe City from the Sensengari Reservoir, a tributary of the Muko River, a water pipe was passed through, and the town that was built on top of it is the water line. However, there are many other ways to find connections with water.
According to one theory, the streets on the side of the bustling ‘dori’ lined with townhouses are called ‘suji’. In fact, when the water pipes were laid in the Taisho period, the area around Hatahara Market was already bustling with activity. When a water pipe whizzed by the side of a lively market, the road was undoubtedly a “streak”.
The arcade of Suidosuji Shopping Street is about 450m. One of the longest roofs in Kobe extends from east to west. Suidosuji Shopping Street, which originally started as an open-air shopping street, was completed in 1958 (Showa 33) with an arcade, making it an all-weather shopping zone.
