■Description
Nikko Tosho-gu is a shinto shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate as its deity. The shrine is a part of the UNESCO-designated World Heritage “Shrines and Temples of Nikko.” Its criteria is the cultural heritage. The historical shrine is very famous, and it’s been said that everyone who lives in Kanto region should have visited at least once much likely for their school trips. Among many Important Cultural Properties, “Yomeimon Gate” stands out for its fame as a National Treasure. The elaborate gate has over 500 reliefs, and it’s been said that you can spend a whole day looking at it. Behind the main shrine, through the steps, there is Okumiya, the grave of Ieyasu. A bronze urn contains the remains of Tokugawa Ieyasu. This sacred section of the shrine had been closed to regular citizens during Edo period. Today’s Tosho-gu is a beloved travel destination which allows your dogs to enter the perimeter, as long as they stay out of the buildings.
