Nuts are a delicious and healthy snack. But they’re still considered a bar food in Japan. So offerings are salty and oily. Not great for the healthy conscious. Luckily, Tofugu’s found some places where you can buy nuts with your bare hands and in person.

  1. if Japanese are the one living older and healthier.. maybe avoiding nuts is the key! 😛

  2. OMG! Every grocery store I have been to in Tokyo has lots of nuts. I by bags of them so I have a healthy snack when I am out and about. konbini's have nuts, hyaku en stores have nuts

  3. … Can you do more videos like these? This was actually great to hear about. I have certain sensitivities and if I ever long-stay in Japan I always wonder how I'm going to find stuff like that. I drink almond milk, hazelnut milk, cashew milk, hemp milk, etc. – Mainly because I have stomach/headache/some-ache issues with milk, coconut and soy (I know, weird). I know that sounds weird, it'll never stop being weird, but knowing where to find ingredients like this is so useful.

  4. You could also check out the somewhat underground places, but those may not be the nuts you, or anyone, for that matter, are looking for.

  5. Huh, I'm lucky enough that my local supermarket has a pretty good selection of nuts but I would not have thought of baking goods stores, thanks! Usually I head straight for the closest Kaldi's Coffee for all my imported cravings. (They have peanut butter too) sadly lacking in New Zealand goods tho T^T

  6. 🙂 Awesome! Thanks! If I get to go to Japan, I do like to cook, and some of my favorite pastries I like to make contain nuts in them ^^ Thanks!

  7. Dang I gotta hoard the filberts and pecans as much as possible before heading over there then!

  8. Yesterday tofugu helped me learn to read hiragana in only two hours, and here today they're making my day with hilarious informative content. What a great company.

  9. I think unsalted peanuts are a seasonal thing? ::googles:: Right, stock up on them when they're sold for Setsubun 🙂

  10. Having lived in Japan I can tell you that black walnuts as opposed to English-type walnuts are impossible to find!
