In a quiet area surrounded by mountains on three sides Gokurakuji is the 2nd of the 88 sacred temples of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. You access the main hall by 44 stone steps. The large cedar tree here is considered to be hand-planted by Kobo Daishi himself and is about 1,200 years old, stands about 31 meters in height, and is about 6 meters in circumference.
