Instead of spending our first full day in Sapporo exploring the vast city, we decided to head out for a day trip.
A day trip to Otaru was highly recommended by several sources, and after experiencing it ourselves we would have to agree. But we decided to take it a step further and go a little farther on the train line past Otaru to Yoichi where you can find the Nikka Whiskey Distillery. Nikka Whiskey was founded by the gentlemen responsible for bringing quality whiskey distilling to Japan, after having gone to Scotland to learn the craft.
In between strolling around the beautiful sights in Otaru, including the famous canal and beautiful touristy shopping street Sakaimachi Street, we made our own glassware. Glassware is a staple of Otaru, and there are several establishments where you can blow your own, under the watchful eye of a master.
It was a jammed packed day, and we hope you enjoy coming along.
