City Description:
Sapporo, capital of the mountainous northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, is famous for its beer, skiing and annual Sapporo Snow Festival featuring enormous ice sculptures. The Sapporo Beer Museum traces the city’s brewing history and has tastings and a beer garden. Ski hills and jumps from the 1972 Winter Olympics are scattered within the city limits

Weather and Events:
Sapporo’s peak travel periods are May–Sep and Dec–Feb, when skiing is possible. The continental climate creates 2 main seasons: snowy winters and warm summers with low humidity. Popular events are the Sapporo Snow Festival (Feb), with statues and sculptures made from snow; the Hokkaido Shrine Festival (Jun), with a large parade; the Yosakoi Soran dance competitions (Jun); the Fireworks Festival (Jul); the Summer Festival (Jul–Aug), known for beer gardens; and Autumn Fest (Sep–Oct), celebrating regional food.
