I am stressed, so let’s self-care by hiking the Togakushi shrine walk, hiking a dangerous trail up Mt. Togakushi, and eating some SOBA. Togakushi is located in Nagano, Japan, and is home to hiking and history. It is the perfect place for self-care.
The Togakushi Five-Shrine Pilgrimage Hike attracts travelers from around the world. It gives travelers the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of Mt. Togakushi and its ancient Shinto sites at the same time.
Togakushi Five-Shrine Pilgrimage Hike (The Togakushi Kodo trail)
The Togakushi Kodo trail connects the five shrines, passing the Hokosha, Hinomikosha, and Chusha shrines before reaching the Kuzuryusha and Okusha Shrines at the base of Mt. Togakushi.

Togakushi is a forested highland plateau that attracts religious pilgrims and hikers who want gorgeous scenery. You can take a trail to walk Togakushi’s five Shinto shrines. Mt. Togakushi is considered a place where Gods dwell. It is the setting for many Japanese stories.
Hokosha Shrine 00:25-00:32
The Hokosha shrine is the shrine visited by most worshippers. Here, the god of learning and the arts is enshrined. Traditionally in Japanese mountain worship, women were forbidden from entering the mountains. According to the history of Mt. Togakushi, this shrine was built for the women prohibited from traveling deeper into the mountain. Some women come to pray for safe childbirth.

Walk 290 steps up to reach the next shrine where the goddess of the arts is enshrined.
Kotoriga Pond 00:43-01:58
Chusha Shrine 00:35-00:43
Walk 15 minutes further to find the Chusha Shrine where the God of wisdom is enshrined here. According to GoNagano.net, People believe that worshiping the god of wisdom brings academic success and business prosperity.

Soba (そば) noodles are noodles made of buckwheat flour, roughly as thick as spaghetti, and prepared in various hot and cold dishes. Soba dishes are very popular in Japan. And I got to try at Soba Crepe and it was amazing.

Kagamiike Pond 03:36-04:05
Located at an elevation of 1,200 meters, the pond mirrors the Togakushi mountain range.
Zuishinmon Gate and Togakushi’s Lane of Cedars 04:05-04:18
The last two of Togakushi’s five shrines are at the end of a 2-kilometer-long trail. In the middle of this path is the Zuishinmon Gate. Once you pass through the gate, a row of giant cedars stands in front of you. Some of these cedars are 400 years old.
Okusha Shrine 04:18-05:10
It is the final shrine on the pilgrimage. It enshrines the God of strength and it is considered the most important of the five Togakushi shrines. People come here to pray for good luck and for their wishes to come true.
