Japan took the top spot in the World Economic Forum’s latest Travel and Tourism Development Index. As Japan reopens its borders, the inbound tourism industry will rebound. But what kind of tourism does Japan need going forward?
The government maintains a target of 15 trillion yen of inbound tourism revenue by 2030. If they achieve that target, tourism will become the nation’s largest export sector, eclipsing its automotive industry. To achieve this aspiration and become a tourism-oriented country, Japan needs more luxury visitors, long-haul travelers, and culturally and naturally rich rural destinations.
On top of that, more and more travelers are demanding sustainable destinations where tourism maintains and regenerates the area’s natural and cultural heritage. Going forward, tourism development, cultural preservation, and regional development need to be managed in sync.
The panel discusses how Japan should upgrade its tourism given these new demands.
