The Numazu Water Gate View-O is a flood gate and observatory. It was built to protect the port from large tsunami cause by an earthquake. In an event of an earthquake of more than intensity 6, the gate will automatically come down within 3 minutes.
The door of the gate is 40 m wide, 9.3 m high and it weighs 406t. Overall, the observatory gate is 30 m high, the same height as a 9 story building.
