Takayama has that kind of unique atmosphere that feels a bit like Kyoto. Walking near the river and enjoying cafes near inside old traditional houses is a good way to discover the city.
My personal recommandation is to move away from the city center and try to discover the shrines in the south of Takayama, especially during Autumn. Also try to spend a night in a ryokan in Okuhida, you can get there by bus in ~1h, the prices are good and you can enjoy some hiking and the nearby Shinhotaka Ropeway the next morning.
