Peak travel is during the warm part of the year (May–Oct). Winter (Nov–Mar) is cold and snowy, but is prime time for viewing Japanese macaques (snow monkeys) bathing in outdoor hot springs. Key events include the Hakodate Goryōkaku Matsuri (May), with a parade in historic dress, and the Hakodate Minato Matsuri/Port Festival (Aug), featuring fireworks, a parade and the town’s unique “ika odori” squid dance.
