When I moved to Niseko, I was told there is no way I would catch fish with my “big” articulated streamers. At the time I laughed it off, as I was fishing one of Kelly Galloup’s Mini Dungeons and was confident I could prove them wrong. Since then I have been catching fish on many different patterns from Galloup, Russ Maddin, Charlie Craven, Brian Wise, and several other American fly tyers, along with some of my own patterns. After finding so much success with streamer fishing in Hokkaido, I decided it is time to make a video and get the secret out. It doesn’t matter if you prefer to fish a Sex Dungeon, Circus Peanut, Peanut Envy, Gonga, Barely Legal, Knucklehead, or even just a frankenstein fly that you come up with on the fly bench one evening… these fish LOVE EATING STREAMERS!
Of course, streamer fishing is just one of the many ways I enjoy fly fishing, but in this video, I focus on showing you that those same flies we love so much in Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Idaho, Utah, Arkansas, the midwest and all across the United States work really well here in Hokkaido, Japan too. Not only that, but since I am one of the only people tying these style flies here… the odds are they haven’t seen these patterns yet and gotten wise to them.
So pull up a chair, pour a cup of coffee (or crack a beer!), put a hook in the vise, and follow along as I fish my way through the Hokkaido jungle. Although I only catch Brown Trout in this video, I also have found that the Rainbow Trout and White Spotted Char (both Iwana and Amemasu) love eating these streamers too.
If you are in the Niseko area or planning a trip to visit Hokkaido, feel free to contact me to book a guided trip or buy flies. The easiest way to reach me is a DM on my instagram (@_nickhill_) or you can shoot me an email at nickhill435@gmail.com. And if streamer fishing isn’t your thing, fear not I spend several days on the water fishing for trout and char with dry flies and nymphs too!
