Traveling on a Dime Winter Culture in Niigata

“国境の長いトンネルを抜けると雪国であった…” The train came out of long tunner under the mountains and into the snow country – Yasunari Kawabata, “Yukiguni”
The opening words of the famous novel have cemented the idea that Niigata is the land of snow and ice in the minds of countless people in and the many visitors to Japan. And while winter time in Niigata is gray and snowy, that doesn’t mean one needs to bundle up in bed and hibernate until spring. Seasonal sushi that can only be had in the wintertime, sake brewing, hot springs and the skiing and snowboarding that gave Niigata its nickname are all excellent ways to appreciate winter in Niigata. Maybe the best?
