◆The Philosopher’s Path is a 1.5km walking path that connects Wakaoji Shrine in the south to Ginkakuji in the north.
A path that follows the flow of a water channel sent from the Suirokaku in the precincts of Nanzenji. Cherry blossoms are planted along the road, and in the spring it is a great sightseeing spot where you can stroll through the tunnel of cherry blossoms. It is a promenade that you will want to visit throughout the four seasons.
History of Philosopher’s Path
Kitaro Nishida, a philosopher from Kyoto, often took walks along this path, which was called the “Shisaku no Komichi”, and later his disciples also liked to take walks. As a result, it became the “Philosopher’s Path” and was officially named in 1972.
It has been selected as one of the 100 best roads in Japan.
Speaking of Ginkakuji! “Kannonden”, the symbol of , is plainer than the golden “Kinkaku (Reliquary Hall*)” in Kinkakuji. Kinkaku-ji is gorgeous, while Ginkaku-ji has a bitter taste of “wabi-sabi”. ◆哲学の道とは、南の若王子神社から北の銀閣寺までを結ぶ、約1.5kmの散策道。
南禅寺境内の水路閣から送られてきた疎水（そすい）の流れに沿って続く道。道沿いには桜が植えられ、春になると桜のトンネルを散策できる絶好の観光スポット。四季を通じて訪れたい散歩道となっています。
哲学の道の歴史
京都の哲学者西田幾多郎（にしだきたろう）氏がよく散歩をし、「思索の小径（しさくのこみち）」と呼ばれていたのが、その後西田氏の弟子らも好んで散策したこともあり、いつしか「哲学の道」となり、1972年正式に銘々されました。
｢日本の道100選」にも選ばれています。
銀閣寺といえば！の象徴「観音殿」は、金閣寺にある金ピカ「金閣（舎利殿※）」に比べて一見地味。金閣寺は華やか、銀閣寺は渋く｢わび・さび｣の趣。銀閣と呼ばれているのに、なぜ銀色ではないの？という疑問に、応仁の乱などでの財政難で銀箔が貼れなかったとか、実は昔は銀箔が貼られていた、という説がありました。
