In Japan, food samples are an essential part of the restaurant industry. Visit almost any store and in the front window, you will see what appear to be freshly made meals, proudly displayed in a glass cabinet like trophies.
Known as Shokuhin Sanpuru (食品サンプル) in Japanese, these incredibly realistic models are designed to give potential customers the most visually authentic experience of the food without ordering it.
As with many Japanese crafts, Food Samples are made by masters of this deceptively delicious art and we were lucky enough to go behind the scenes at Iwasaki Replica Foods in Osaka.
In this video, you’ll learn how to make 3 different types of popular sample dishes; Tempura Shrimp (海老天), Zarusoba Noodles (ざるそば), and Yakitori Grilled Chicken (焼き鳥).

A huge thank you to IWASAKI Replica Foods, for allowing us to film and showing us around their facility. You can find more details about what they do at the links below:

  1. Great video. I would put a "fake" into the title before food samples, as I was confused wether the video will be about sample food instead of plastic food samples.

  2. Finally a new video! Damn, I was late for this. Had to take time off with family. Now the wait for another video continues 😀

  3. If you've been to Japan before then you've no doubt seen some of these super realistic food samples before!
Which ones your favourite though? Or which are you most curious to see 'how it's made'?

  4. Very cool to see the process of these being made. Was a real help when I first moved to Japan and couldn't communicate what I wanted to eat. Glad to see you guys again. Planning to get back soon.

  5. I've been a vegetarian for eight years but even I wanted to eat that plastic chicken lol. Thanks for the super interesting video!

  6. Alert! Alert! Alert! A deep earthquake occurred under the Nankai Trough in Japan today. That is a very bad thing to see. I heard the Nankai Trough fault line is due to have a 9.3m earthquake in the near future years ago. Also, an earthquake swarm is occurring over 100 miles to the south southeast of Tokyo Japan. And people in southeast of Japan, get ready for a possible big 7.0m earthquake to happen there at any time now. According to dutchsince.

  7. This company has the tools and expertise to make whatever they want. I'd make fictional foods like blue bananas and neon green waffles. Maybe doused with purple syrup. Maybe throw in an exotic fruit on the side.
