Off the coast of Nagasaki lies Gunkanjima, a former coal mine with shafts dug deep into the sea.

Gunkanjima was once just a rock island, until coal was discovered. The coal mine was developed, and after some time it became a real concrete town for the miners and their families. As with most things humans create, coal was used less and less due to changing technology. The mine was subsequently shut down and the entire island abandoned, its fate left to the cruel hands of the sea and the wind. 🌊

Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the role it played in Japan’s industrialization, Gunkanjima is open for guided tours. Come on a tour of the island and learn about its history with me!
