Port Stephens is a 20-kilometer natural harbor north of Newcastle on the Australian East Coast in the state of New South Wales.
It is located about 170 kilometers north of Sydney and is larger than Port Jackson in Sydney. The main resorts on the edge of the harbor are Shoal Bay, Nelson Bay, Salamander Bay, Lemon Tree Passage, Karuah and the coastal villages of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest. The harbor took its name from Captain James Cook when he passed the place on May 11, 1770, naming it after Sir Philip Stephens.
Nelson Bay offers boat tours for dolphin and whale watching. Another attraction is the huge sand dunes near the small village of Anna Bay.
Nelson Bay has a maritime-influenced humid subtropical climate.
