This was one of the highlights of my Poland series of videos. A ferry from the Polish seaside resort of Hel to Gdansk, with a stop at Sopot and Westerplatte. We get up close and personal with some massive ships as we pass through the harbour of Gdansk. #Hel Ferry

  1. Good video! Thanks for taking the time and trouble of including information about the passing ships and other landmarks along the way; it was much appreciated. Gdansk looked like a very interesting place to visit in your previous viog.

  2. You missed a ship at 1:10 Look to the left, that battleship model in a case. Which ship is that and what is it doing on a ferry ?
It could be the Schleswig-Holstein which fired the first shots of WW2 at the battle of the Westerplatte, Gdansk.
There is a maritime museum to visit in Gdansk.

  3. Great video as always! Btw the ferry at 5.28 is a Polferry not P&O as mentioned in the subtitle, unless somethings changed 😅

  4. Stena Scandica formerly Stena Lagan sailing Belfast to Liverpool until it and Stena Mersey were replaced during the pandemic. The Lagan and Mersey sailed to the shipyard at Gdańsk where they were cut in half and a new mid hull section added to lengthen them for their new job on the Baltic. A bit of trivia there

  5. Hello Scot,

After the traintrip a was eager to see t ferry-trip. Well it is a great video with stunning footage.

  6. Great video. Sopot is twinned with my home city of Southend on Sea, Essex and I visited that pier though it was snowing! The beaches in Poland seem to be much cleaner than those in the UK.

  7. Thanks for the amazing ferry trip! Living in the Arizona, USA desert, we have few buses, trains or ferrys. I love the adventures you vlog and your honesty about the journey. We do have a lovely train here in the Verde Valley, it's a short round trip style train ride from the mining area of Jerome to an old ranch that also had a train stop. Great desert and riparian ride if you're ever near Sedona Arizona.

  8. Very clever and interesting video. Your European trip videos are consistently excellent

  9. Scott, thanks for these excellent videos- this is by far my favourite channel. If it's any help I can recommend the following to do whilst in Gdansk:
There's a canal trip you can do along the Elblag (the vessel we went on was 'Labedz' (Swan); it is unusual compared to a British/ Western European canal as it doesn't have locks. Instead the boat is lifted out of the canal and carried on a set of rails up a hill. Although not unique, I've never seen one myself on my travels anywhere else. It's something to see a boat 'driving' up a hill when you're on the path next to it. (PS It was featured by the other great traveller, Michael Palin).

Then at Gydnia there's the ORP Blyskawica (Lightning) which is the famous WW2 Destroyer which singlehandedly shot down half the Luftwaffe when they decided to bomb the ship yards at Cowes when the vessel was in for refit. I haven't been aboard myself yet, but it's on my list. A ship that took part in just about every Northern hemisphere Naval operation of WW2 as it was one of the fastest ships afloat. There is also the SS Soldek- the first Polish vessel built post WW2- nothing out of the ordinary, apart from kickstarting Polish pride of ship building once more, but it's the level of access- you'd never get to see this much of a museum ship in UK. It's really quite 'hands on.'

PS The 'PO ship' you refer to was the Pride of Canterbury, formerly POSL Canterbury, then Stena Fantasia and oddly previously the Fiesta before the then Fantasia and Fiesta had a name swap. It was originally built as a general purpose Ro-Pax/ freighter and its class of three (one sunk- remains still in Cyprus I think) were largely regarded as being the ugliest ships ever designed and the slowest. I only add that pointless note as it's probably the only ship to go from freighter to day passenger to then what amounts to a cruise ferry, and the rebuild was considered one of the nicest afloat due to its massive panoramic windows.

Thanks again for the excellent videos. I hope you enjoy making them as much as we like watching them.

  10. Love it – brought back so many memories, crossing from Hel to Gdynia about 10 years ago, on a blazingly hot August morning with my wife and (then) little kids. Thanks!

  11. Wow! I live nearby … it's kind of "exotic" you've chosen this area in the autumn/winter time. It's cold (but this season is relatively warm)… you cannot bath in the sea (if you're not a MORS – a cold bathing lover) but … the beaches in the summertime, which is about 25-32 deegrees hot, are packed. Now you've got it on your own… it's unpopular but you can see the normal life and you have an opportunity to se the real nature! So cool 🥰

  12. The Poles LOVE their bikes. Not quite as much as the Dutch or the Danes, (and if you want Mountain bikes, you need the Czechs, Slovaks and, weirdly, the French for that) but they do love their bikes.

  13. It would have helped if you'd taken the time to show us round the ferry..I don't even know if their was a cafe on board, and if so what was available.
