Kyoto’s Kiyomizudera is one of the most celebrated temples in Japan. The temple is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Kiyomizudera was founded in the 8th century and its present buildings were constructed in the 17th century. There is not a single nail used in the entire structure. Kiyomizudera takes its name from the waterfall within the temple complex, which runs off the nearby hills—Kiyomizu means clear water, or pure water.
