This is Day 5 of our Ireland vacation (Part 2)! 🙂

Part 1 of this Day was at Blarney Castle! After a lunch break we moved on to a tour of The Old Jameson Irish Whiskey Distillery! We paid €16 for Joe and €13 for my student price to take The Jameson Experience Tour.

Our tour began with a 10-minute video explaining John Jameson’s life and how he created Jameson Irish Whiskey including information about ingredients. It made Joe and I chuckle the few times they insulted Scotch as a comparison and was very propaganda-like. The effect, however, did get you excited to learn more.

After the video we were lead outside by our tour guide. We learned that the old factories were originally used for wool before being required for use as military barracks during the Napoleonic Wars. From building to building they walked us through the process of whiskey making. Another building showed us the barrel making and maturation process they go through.

The new distillery (which you can also tour) is right next to the old distillery and was pointed out to us.

Finally, our tour guide asks for some volunteers to taste three types of whiskeys side-by-side. One was an American Whiskey (single distilled Jack Daniels), one was a Scotch (twice distilled Johnny Walker Black), and (of course) the Triple Distilled Jameson Irish Whiskey. I personally liked the Jameson the best out of the three, however, I don’t know how it compares to the perhaps better brands.

Also included in the tour was a full-sized drink! You could get Jameson on the rocks, neat, or with lime and ginger.
