Inuyama Castle is located in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture, and is a flat mountain castle built on an 88 m hill on the southern bank of the Kiso River at the border between Owari and Mino regions. The ruins of the castle are designated as a national historic site, and the castle tower, a national treasure, is one of the 12 existing castles. This castle was the last privately owned castle in Japan until 2004.
Inuyama Castle was the base of Oda Nobuyasu, uncle of Oda Nobunaga, and was used by the Western Army during the Battles of Komaki Nagakute and the Battle of Sekigahara.
In the Edo period (1603-1867), Masanari Naruse, an important vassal of the Owari Tokugawa family, received the land. The castle tower was renovated to its present form at that time. Thereafter, nine generations of the Naruse clan held the castle until the end of the Edo period.
The castle tower has a three-story exterior, a four-story interior, and two basement levels. The castle tower is a composite watchtower type tower with a one-story attached turret on the south and west sides of the tower. The tower is 19 meters high, and the stone walls of the tower base are 5 meters high, covering a total area of 698.775 square meters. From the top floor of the tower, a panoramic view of the Mino Plain and Owari Plain can be seen.
It is said that Masanaga Naruse, the 7th head of the Naruse family, laid a carpet on the top floor of the tower because of his friendship with the head of the Dutch trading post in Nagasaki, and this carpet was reproduced during the Showa Period (1926-1989) repairs.
Inuyama Castle is said to be the oldest existing wooden castle tower in Japan, and much of the wood from the time of its construction remains. Whenever you step on the floor made of old timbers that have been engraved with history, you can feel the weight of history on your skin with a creaking sound. In 2006, Inuyama Castle was selected as one of the 100 best castles in Japan (No. 43), attracting many tourists.
