Puerto Escondido is a laid-back beach town located along the West Coast in the State of Oaxaca. It’s one of the most popular beach destinations along the Oaxacan coast, attracting mostly surfers and backpackers. Once you set foot in Puerto Escondido, you’ll fall madly in love with the beaches, authentic food, and relaxed vibes. In this video, we highlight 6 things that you cannot miss in Puerto Escondido. Spend at least 3 to 5 days in the area to be able to fit them all in!
6. Beach Hike from Playa Principal to Playa Manzanillo
At number 6 we have the beach hike from Playa Principal to Playa Manzanillo. The walkway sits right next to the water and starts from the western end of Playa Principal. It has a few scenic overlooks and you can spot many birds and crabs along the way. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to get to Playa Manzanillo, where you can refresh in the calm waters or have a drink!
5. Try Local Food
The state of Oaxaca in general is known for its delicious cuisine. With ingredients such as chocolate, Oaxaca cheese, mezcal, grasshoppers, and mole sauce, there’s so many unique dishes that you have to try.
4. Manialtepec Lagoon / Bioluminescence
Only a short 20-minute drive from Puerto Escondido sits the Manialtepec Lagoon. This beautiful lake is a sanctuary for birds and home to bioluminescent plankton. It’s a peaceful and quiet place that is best explored by boat tour or by kayak.

3. Day Trip To Mazunte
Another great thing to do when you’re in Puerto Escondido is to visit the nearby sleepy town of Mazunte. To get to there, you can take a local bus from Puerto Escondido. Flag down the bus to Pochutla and hop on until you reach San Antonio. From there you’ll have to take a taxi or local collectivo. Known for its small beach bays, hippie vibes, and sweeping vistas of the Pacific Ocean, Mazunte has a certain charm to it.
2. Surf & hit the beaches
Incredible surf conditions are what put Puerto Escondido on the map. It’s known as one of the top surf destinations in the world with the biggest waves coming between April and October at the northern end of Playa Zicatela. But if you’re not an advanced surfer, you can surf the gentler waves at Playa Carrizalillo or La Punta. And of course, you don’t have to have an interest in surfing to enjoy the beaches in Puerto Escondido. There are eight beautiful beaches that are waiting to be explored. Our favorite ones include the crescent-shaped beach of Carrizalillo, the large Playa Bacocho, and the bohemian La Punta.
1. Release Baby Turtles
Turtle conservation is a big issue in Puerto Escondido and volunteers monitor more than 30 km of beaches around Puerto Escondido to ensure the turtle eggs don’t get stolen by local people who eat them. They also have several turtle egg hatcheries to help shade the eggs from the sun, which is an important part of the conservation. Every day at Playa Bacocho, baby turtles are released into the ocean. You can pay 100 pesos (5$) to partake in the release at 5pm. You’ll also learn about the turtles and the project. The money you pay goes towards the project, which is a great initiative if you ask us!

Awesome! Looks like really great surfing. I had no idea.
Organisation, which helped turtles to survive is really amazing 🙌🏼
We watch your videos to learn about locations AND improve our videos. The b-roll in this one is fantastic and the drone shots over the water are amazing.

Hi, i going to be three weeks in Mexico including san cristobal. Do you recommend to go to puerto Escondido or playa, isla mujeres and the caribian side? Thank you😇
Well done! I have been to PE three times and seen several PE videos (perhaps an overdone topic lately) – but this is one of the best. I would have added to your list some of the deserted beaches on the perimeter of PE: Playas Barra Colotepec, Colorada and Roca Blanca and also a long walk through Centro. I checked out and enjoyed several of your other Mexico videos as well. Great content!
I lived there for three years and am moving back soon,
I was a volunteer at the Turtle Release and my daughter was the translator from Spanish to English. Hugo who is in charge there has been a friend of the family for years.
I’ve watched many PE videos because I’m currently planning a trip there! No one mentions the best way to get there from Oaxaca city 🙁 tips??
I am not too good with the heat. Would you say it’s uncomfortable temp wise?
Great vlog! really enjoyed this one! just wish we saw before we travelled Puerto Escondido. Subscribing
I'm now in puerto escondido and want to do the beach walk hike but I cant find the exact way to start and go can you help me
This is hideous to wear the useless mask in a free on the beach. The world/humanity is done, no matter how beautiful the beaches are. They all listen to bill hates and fuchi.
The best video. My friend 💯. Un estado muy chingo
Be careful at La Laguna, they are definitely crocodiles there. People have gotten bitten, so always be aware.
