I shot only the sunrise scene in March.
Yashima is the symbolic mountain of Takamatsu City, the capital of Kagawa Prefecture.
Yashima means “roof island.” As you can see, it is shaped like a roof.
“Shima” means “island” in Japanese, but it is now a mountain connected to the land.

Yashima is a “mesa” (Spanish), a mountain that has the same structure as the Monument Valley in the United States.

Yashima is a famous place mentioned in Japanese biographies.
One particularly famous biography is the Battle of Yashima, which took place in 1185.

The name of the operation “Operation Yashima” mentioned in the play Neon Genesis Evangelion, an anime created by Hideaki Anno, is modeled after this Yashima.

In 1969, an aquarium was built on the mountain and is still in operation.
In addition, a new facility, the Yashima Mountain Exchange Centre, is scheduled to open in August 2022.

When I was a child, we used to take the cable car to go up the mountain to Yashima.
However, the number of cable car users declined as more and more people went to the top of Yashima by private car. For this reason, the cable car line was closed in 2005.
The remains of the cable car tracks and the station can still be seen today.
