When you drop by Hida Osaka in Gero City (Gifu Prefecture), you can see the rocky cliff “Gandate” towering before you. Gandate Canyon is a cross-section of lava flow formed about 54,000 years ago. Similar lava walls extend upstream along rivers for 17 km, and are said to be the largest of their kind in Japan.

Also popular among tourists here are the Hida Osaka Falls. There are more than 200 waterfalls formed by lava. You can go on a hike and get up close to see these majestic waterfalls. Choose from among 14 hiking trails, from beginner trails that you can walk by yourself to advanced trails that you can join with a guide.

In winter, you can see the waterfalls wrapped up in snow and ice, and enjoy this change in scenery.
