Always can improve….how about google translator, babblefish, Rosetta Stone etc.
I was born in Korea, but I only know a few words.
I had to move to Minnesota when I was a kid and had a fear being White Washed. Lol but I like to learn different languages because I want to buy a home outside this Country lol.
i feel we shud learn cuz that wud open up more doors to ur native people
"If there's a will, there's a way"
I never cared till I moved back to the philippines. Now i try to learn but i still suck at it. Most filipinos dont care about filipino culture. 50% of filipino women marry white guys and dont pass their culture anyway in america
My ex was a chiuchow/teochew viet-ABC and initially I thought he was close enough with our culture to connect on a deeper level but I soon realized he doesn't put in effort to really learn dialect/mandarin, only in initial stages when were getting to know each other. If you wish to date someone from asia, idk at least try to show improvement? He was probably expecting like other mixed racial couples where usually the women compromised and communicated in english with a US dude and I wasn't having that. Even though I am fluent in english as a singaporean, it was excruciating to describe my emotions in english while I was hurt and crying and got to explain what 委屈 meant in english wtf. My minimum expectation for my partner is that they're able to speak mandarin/dialect, or contextually/culturally think like chinese person. I'm glad my parents raised me in a dialect speaking environment but I've also accepted that I would probably remain single as most chinese singaporean couples speaks engish with each other/kids, so this bare requirement along with other compatibility issue probably boxed me up into a corner hahah.
Being a translator must be an easy job if you are fluent in both. I was on a call with Japan and everyone is told to pause long enough between thoughts to allow the translator to speak. So impressive how she would easily translate a lot of corporate speak.
I can speak it but can't read or write. But I don't speak it with any coworkers or friends because of fear of racists.
Why is it okay for say…a second or third generation German, French, Italian, or Croatian person to lose their own native tongue and speak only English in America but it isn't okay for an Asian or any distinct non-white???
Don’t forget to give your moms pearls back 😂
Depends if you can't tell your grandmother you.her or be able to help your grandparents .Meeting native speaker you like friendship and dating. It's your situation they make such point speaking English it bilingual nor trilingual who get jobs
My mom and grandma always laughed at me speaking their native language and I was always embarrassed, which ment I couldn't talk to my grandparents . So now grown up I wished I didn't get made fun of speaking their language and actually wished I had someone else teach me bc now my step mom (20 years later) is teaching me and I wish I could communicate with her family better and also learn more of my culture. Im using YouTube to hopefully help me understand and learn new and more words.
Is the parents fault for not forcing and teaching the kid native tongue. All Koreans I met growing up in canada speaks Korean. Other Asian cultures not so much.
I don't think it makes you a "bad Asian" but I think you should make an effort to learn your native language. I do feel embarrassed I don't know how to read or write in Chinese anymore since I only learned briefly when I was young, but I at least I am able to speak it fluently at an above average level.
In Indonesia, more young children are beginning to use English over Indonesian. A lot of the media that they consume is in English. It's because of globalization more than individual fault.
Bruuuh! We have the same issue here on the African continent. I'm South African and if you know anything about South Africa then you'll know racial segregation by the Apartheid government made it so that black people had to learn Afrikaans and English to survive amongst White people. Apartheid ended 28 years ago, but the notions about assimilating with white culture for the sake of surviving still exist amongst black kids who grew up around white spaces and not amongst their native group. We have 11 official languages and I'm from the Bapedi tribe. We speak Sepedi – it's lessor known than say Zulu or Xhosa (which was the language spoken in Black Panther ✊🏾). I'm like a 5 or 6 out of 10 in speaking because my mom had a housekeeper who couldn't speak English and that forced me to learn the language growing up, I also did Sotho in school which is a similar language and I would visit my mom's hometown during school holidays and that forced me to speak, but black folks often make fun of you when you can't speak your mother-tongue well. They lament the loss of the culture too. It's just a reality we have to face.
I'm an animation director so when I see an opportunity to showcase my people or culture I do, by either featuring characters like my gran in my animations or by featuring the clothing, food or values of the culture in my character designs and films. That's my contribution 🤷🏾♀️. My heart goes out to people in any diasporic group who feel a little disconnected to their culture. Even a little effort makes a difference.
I enjoyed my Mandarin class and culture . Also spanish.
fake Asian lmao,
1st Gen ABC (my immigrant relatives called us American Born "Jook-Sing")… just chillax in your ethnic community if you choose to do so to pick up on those language skills.
I can't imagine how it is with full asians with immigrant parents who never learned parents native tongue. I never thought of that, but of course I would get asked as a 2nd gen mixed kid if I spoke cebuano or tagalog. My grandfather is full filipino and my aunties and dad speak tagolog, but I was never taught. I just barely speak that American English 😂😂😂
Yea you should be ashamed. Speak your native younger and culture is a hard and stressful road but it’s absolutely important to your heritage. Not even at least trying to speak a little bit of your own language is just pure ignorance and you are probably a white worshipping self hater. Most white people that speak one language only is pretty embarrassing as well and some are even proud of it LOL
NO
that means you are a good American
but discounted white
dont even call youself asian cause its embarrassing
Lol born Japanese raised in the south in the 80s with no other Japanese people. I never had a chance. 😅
I'm a black guy and I hella love your guys' videos. I admit that I am obsessed with asian culture and history, especially east asian culture, so much so that when i meet asians I often find out i know more about their own culture than they usually know. They're often surprised when i get to talking about asian thought and history lol But i admit i have not taken the time to learn any asian language but i find asian langauges so fuckin dope. But i really love the chinese language. These younger generation kids need to stop playin around and learn their language. it'd be a travesty on their part not to.
does it make me less black that i liked more and i naturally gravitate more toward, Shang Chi than Black Panther? Like why do i have to get judged for saying that I enjoyed shang chi more than black panther? Oh cause i'm black, right. lol Can you guys do a video on bullshit stereotypes that any of us have to follow based on our race or culture??
*Edit specifically how bullshit cultural appropriation is. What's wrong if i wanna wear my fucking rice hat to the beach? what's the problem with Jeremy Lin getting braids? it's bullshit that we get attacked for rocking or embracing other people's culture
I rarely speak it and will not allow my kids to. I don't care what anyone says.
Shut the f out!! I am living this cause . Bros… I feel you ( how feels you). Sum thing lie that.😂😂
It's as bad as being unvaccinated.
Shame, shame, shame. Gee!
Now this is a great episode. Loved it and I learned something.
i absolutely hate when ur japanese and ppl immediately want to b ur friend just so they cud bug the shit out of u to teach them……..like what?! i did THE WORK u gotta do it too!!!
I am not perfectly sure but most of parents have been immigrated from any other countries such as asian countries or other countries, they would be forced to learn their mother tongues for keeping their ethnic identity.

I'm a 39 year old who says he cares but hasn't really tried! 🙁 I'm gonna work on it though!
Oh damn they've been trying to mess up the algorithms of this channel. Come on folks
In my perspective, even though your parents tried to teach you their mother tongue, you're are actually bad. Why? You should understand your parents deeply as their child. But if you don't know their native language, you never know the way they have lived and their footages. Because the language is a door to different culture.
I’m not Asian, but I am Hispanic. When I was younger, I didn’t want to speak Spanish. Even though I’m in a Hispanic-majority area and Spanish being my first language (even though I forgot it), I thought that speaking Spanish was lame. I think that mindset partly came from my maternal grandmother would be Critical of my pronouncation and overly correct me. I know she was just trying to help, but I hated it when she did that. It was like my Spanish wasn’t good enough. Now though, I view speaking Spanish (or any other language) as absolutely necessary Not only in maintaining culture but also in the workplace. It’s a nice skill to have when you can speak another language.
i speak cantonese and mandarin and i am forever grateful to be able to do this. It is a gift that i cherish everyday.
hi brothers, it is understandable. Indian Americans also can barely speak their mother tongues.
I am someone I'm 20's I have a 5 year old sibling that is in elementary school the same one I went to back in 2002
Yesterday I she given me this letter English for speaker of other languages (esol) program
That she didn't needed it
I frozen then tears ran my eyes. I had to explain that when was I child had to go to esol class.
Before I could maybe understand Spanish at 5 year old level.
Once I fail my English speaking skills. And put in class made to feel that English should be the only language I should know.
Even after going to another school also in another state I was still made to take those classes. I never felt so upset for not speaking up when I did.
I told her she her friend lucca only know Spanish she has to be in the same program as the rest on non English students.
It is very important to know 2 or more languages. Especially our own language. The one our parents speak. It will make us see things differently. It's like living in 2 different world. It also will enhance our ways in life.
TAKE THE INITIATIVE TO LEARN , DONOT FEEL GUILTY.
PRACTICE MAKE PERFECT.
Living in the west second generation asians can forget their original culture. But it is up to the parents to make it important. I speak basic Cambodian, but I need to improve, but still can speak to my relatives who can't speak English.
It’s a small so they get off your ass and travel and learn to unlike ‘Americans’ because Americans on average are closed minded or like the Trumps
