First is the Tottori Prefecture, the most famous for its sand dunes, the largest in Japan, which cover over 30 square kilometers of coast to the north of the city center.
Okayama Prefecture, known for its delicious fruit. Okayama City is home to
the imposing, black Okayama Castle and Okayama Korakuen, one of Japan’s three greatest landscape gardens.
Shimane Prefecture is located along the Sea of Japan coast in the Sanin Region. Touristic highlights include Matsue and its castle; Izumo Taisha, Japan’s oldest shrine; Iwami Ginzan, a historic silver mine; and the Adachi Art Museum with its wonderful garden.
Hiroshima Prefecture, city was destroyed by an atomic bomb during World War II. Today, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park commemorates the 1945 event. In the park are the ruins of Genbaku Dome, one of the few buildings that was left standing near ground zero. Other prominent sites include Shukkei-en and Hiroshima Castle.
Yamaguchi prefecture is famous for their Fugu dishes and chefs specializing in cutting Fugu. Since Fugu can be highly poisonous if the toxins within it are ingested, specially trained licensed chefs are the only ones who can cut and serve Fugu.
