Ryokans (traditional houses) are very common in Japan especially in urban areas. Since Kiso valley is one of the favorite destinations for hiking and people who are history buffs (Suhara was one of post towns in the Nakasendo trail which connected Tokyo and Kyoto during the Edo Period), a visit to post towns in the old trade route Kisoji is a must when you are in Japan.

However, because these post towns are located in mountainous and sparsely-populated areas, hotel accommodations are not common. I was fortunate that I was able to book a cheaper and easily-accessible alternative.

Although this house is more than a 100-year old, modern amenities are present (two toilets with washlet, a washing machine and other modern equipment). And the owner was very accommodating, picking me up at the station, accompanying me to buy my food in the convenience store and preparing my bed :-). The place is just a 6-minute walk from Suhara Station.

When you are in Suhara to experience what it’s like during the Edo Period, don’t forget to book Minshuku Suhara to experience history and be transported back in time.
