Using our Canon EOS R7 cameras and the RF 100-500mm and RF 800mm telephoto lenses, Heather and I do some backyard bird photography, first at our house and later at Heather’s parent’s house. We photographed Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, Northern Cardinals, Eastern Towhee, Carolina Chickadee, and Heather got a lifer, an Ovenbird! It was a nice day of photography and Heather’s parents provided us with a Labor Day feast!

beautiful photos! at the moment my thought is whether to take the 1,4x for my 100-500 or try to use the 800 f11
The RF 800mm f11 is my favorite lens paired with the canon R5 😊 super light weight and very nice image quality
Great variety there Phil and Heather. Just amazing how many colors there were. It must be pretty satisfying to be able to get all those great shots in a backyard. Thanks for sharing the video 👍🙏
As usual you both made some great images. The hummingbirds just left us here in NC for the most part. I love shooting them in the summer. In the fall we feed the songbirds so I can't wait to get some shots of "our" birds here in my backyard. That R7 will come in clutch this year for my bird shots. Cheers.
Enjoyed the video. Thanks Phil and Heather.
Once we get our backyard back into place after reconstructing part of our house taken out by a tree, I plan to put 2 or 3 feeders in our backyard. Our neighbor has a ton of birds around their back deck (and a few squirrels). Nice to have them around!
Amazing what is possible with the R7 and RF 800. But you can definately tell the difference…. the RF 800 looks in overall mostly worse than the 100-500L. Partially due the extreme focal lenght, mainly because the RF 800 F11 is just worse than the RF 100-500L.
I really like my RF 800, especially on full frame its charming light and performing well, but on my R7 now… nope, not funny for general wildlife, as nice the range is.
I am looking now forward to a Sigma 150-600C, the F6,3 will make a lot more things possible, especially worse light and manual focussing where the F11 lens just sucks.
Wondering if its worth keeping the RF 800, but i will see how much more annoying the sigma is with its weight and AF issues. The RF 800 is just awesome as a walk & shoot supertele for wildlife.
Hello Phil and Heather! Awesome video like always, all the pictures are amazing, I love that ovenbird, I am on the migration wacth in my area, most of the birds are gone, today I saw many tennessee warblers, Yellow rumped warblers, a Cooper's Hawk and a lífer for me was a very cute and small Brown Creeper, keep up with the awesome content 🐦👏🤗
Wow! Just a little backyard stuff, eh? Being able to do that makes you guys Masters of Light. Canon should take notice. And, your compositions are phenomenal! I hope you have the links to sell, sell, sell them. They are so much better than the others I watch. Jared Polen, the Fro, introduced his blog today advertising a publishing hook that seems to make your stuff available to the whole world to buy. Check it out. I'd buy your pictures for sure. Your superior compositions can hang on my wall any day!
Beautiful photos Phil and Heather!
This dueling backyard birdoff was definitely entertaining. I love when you mix in gear talk/review (like when you were in your backyard), along with the shooting birds (in Heather's parents backyard) into one video. This was like getting a twofer😆. Thanks y'all👍.
Beautiful images.
Nice shots from the backyard! I really liked the humming bird pictures.
Do you do it in manual or one of the other Settings. I was tickled pink when videoing in Movie Mode in Manual Setting at an Aperture F/2.8 and 1/8 Shutter Speed and Auto ISO and could not believe how sharp the image was. I was using the EF-S 24mm pancake lens with no stabilization on the R10. Cheers!
Amazing shots from you both. Loved the hummingbirds and that portrait of the house finch from Heather definitely looked regal🧝🏻♀️ so cool that she captured that Ovenbird too, she looked happy:)) Also great job on the in flight captures, they are stunning little flying jewels!😍 Thanks for sharing!
