One of my favorite things about summer in Japan (despite the nasty summer heat) are the amazing summer festivals that can be found throughout Japan. While I typically don’t recommended traveling to Tokyo during the summer, the Japanese festivals definitely are something to experience at least once.

Awaodori is definitely one of my favorite festivals and it typically takes place during Japan’s hottest time of the year. Awaodori (阿波踊り)or the Awa Dance Festival is a festival that is held in a variety of different areas. The two we visited were the Koenji Awaodori and the Shimokitazawa Awaodori. The Koenji Awa Odori is probably the most famous one in Tokyo with groups from all over Japan showing off their mad dance skills. Shimokitazawa’s, however, is a lot more close-knit and there are many oppurtunities to join in on the dancing.

So if you are the kind of person who wants to spectate, I recommend Koenji, while Shimokita’s is definitely for those who want to get in on the action.

Absolutely, a must-see or must-do festival in Tokyo!

  1. I love these kinds of videos! Showcasing Japanese culture and all of it's cool little festivals and such. So, definitely bring us more 🙂
Only "bad" thing about the vids is that they aren't long enough! lol
It would definitely be cool to have them longer or like show bloopers or other extras at the end could be another idea 🙂

  2. Hey Y'all! Smash that like button if you've ever been as smashed as I was at the end of the video! Hahaha
