Important Cultural Property “Kimiidera Temple”
Japan Heritage “Treasure Trove of Stunning Views Wakanoura”
Official name: Kimiisan Kongohoji Gokoku-in Temple
Saigoku 33 Pilgrimage Routes have been registered as a Japan Heritage site as “1300-year-old Japan’s journey to the end of life.”

It is located in Wakayama Prefecture in Japan.
Kimiidera Temple is a sacred temple founded in 770 AD during the reign of Emperor Konin, during the Nara period, by the Tang monk Iko Shonin.

Ikōshōnin came from China (then Tang Dynasty) across the turbulent East China Sea, ignoring the dangers of his life in order to propagate.
Then, he traveled around the world and spread Buddhism in order to relieve the suffering of people with the light of Kannon’s mercy. In the middle of the pilgrimage, he happened to come to this place, and in the middle of the night, he was able to see the spiritual light on the side of Mt. 　
He rejoiced that this place was a sacred place for Kannon’s mercy and a place for the spread of Buddhism. It is said that this is the origin of Kimiidera Temple.

During the Kamakura period (1185–1333), more than 500 monks are said to have resided here. During the Edo period (1603-1867), successive lords of the Kishu Tokugawa family visited the mountain frequently, and it was revered as the ‘Kishu prayer hall’.

Kimiidera is said to have been named because it is a temple in Kishu with three wells.
Even today, pure water from Mitsui, the Shojosui water , the Yoryusui water, and the Kisshosui water, never ceases to flow within the precincts. (The Mitsui water of Kimiidera was selected as one of the 100 best waters in Japan by the Environment Agency in 1985.)

It used to be a temple of the Yamashina sect of Shingon Buddhism, but it became independent in 1951 and is now the head temple of the Guze Kannon sect, which has 16 branch temples in Yamauchi and the prefecture.

It is famous as a famous spot for early-blooming cherry blossoms, and from the precincts you can see scenic spots such as Wakanoura, Awaji Island, and Shikoku. There are many writers and artists who draw sticks from ancient times, and many brushstrokes are left in poetry, haiku, and painting.

正式名：紀三井山金剛宝寺護国院(きみいさんこんごうほうじごこくいん)
西国三十三か所巡礼道が｢1300年続く日本の終活の旅｣として日本遺産に登録されました。

和歌山県和歌山市にあります。
奈良朝時代、光仁天皇の宝亀元年(ＡＤ770)、唐僧・為光上人（いこうしょうにん）によって開基された霊刹です。

為光上人（いこうしょうにん）は、伝教のため身の危険も顧みず、波荒き東シナ海を渡って中国(当時の唐国)より到来しました。
そして諸国を巡り、観音様の慈悲の光によって、人々の苦悩を救うため、仏法を弘められました。行脚の途中、たまたまこの地に至り、夜半名草山中腹に霊光を観じられて翌日登山され、そこに千手観音様の尊像をご感得になりました。 　
彼は、この地こそ観音慈悲の霊場、仏法弘通の勝地なりとお歓びになり、十一面観世音菩薩像を、自ら一刀三礼のもとに刻み、一宇を建立して安置されました。それが紀三井寺の起こりとされています。

その後、歴代天皇の御幸があり、また後白河法皇が当山を勅願所と定められて以後隆盛を極め、鎌倉時代（1185–1333）には止住する僧侶も五百人を越えたと伝えられています。江戸時代（1603-1867)に入ると、紀州徳川家歴代藩主が頻繁に来山され、｢紀州祈祷大道場｣として尊崇されました。

紀三井寺とは、紀州にある、三つの井戸が有るお寺ということで名付けられたといわれ、今も境内には、清浄水(しょうじょうすい)、楊柳水(ようりゅうすい)、吉祥水(きっしょうすい)の三井より清水が湧き出していて絶えることがありません。(紀三井寺の三井水は1985年、環境庁より日本名水百選に選ばれました)

以前は真言宗山階派の寺院でしたが、1951年に独立し現在は、山内・県下あわせて十六ヶ寺の末寺を擁する救世観音宗(ぐぜかんのんしゅう)の総本山となっています。

早咲き桜の名所として名高く、境内から景勝・和歌の浦、淡路島・四国も遠望出来、観光地としても有名です。古来文人墨客にして杖引く人も多く、詩歌に、俳諧に、絵画にと、多くの筆の跡が遺されています。
