【方向幕 Rollsign】583系　電車寝台　雷鳥・なは・しらさぎ・有明　583 Series Train Destination Sign

国鉄583系電車の側面幕です。

583系列車について・・・1967年から生産された電車寝台列車。座席を引き出して寝台にできるよう設計されており、昼間は座席のまま普通の特急として運転される傍ら、夜間は寝台列車として走るなど、幅広い運用に就けるよう工夫されています。

この電車の方向幕最大の特徴と言えば、その形態。方向幕は横長である例がほとんどですが、583系の方向幕は正方形になっています。
特徴的な正方形の方向幕は、この列車の特殊な設計がもたらした産物です。

出来る限り座席店員を増やせるよう、車両限界いっぱいまで屋根を広げてしまった結果、本来天井に取り付けるはずの機器を設置するスペースがなくなってしまったため、車体端にまとめて設置されており、
それにより方向幕を本来設置するようなスペースがなくなってしまったため、省スペースで済むように正方形の方向幕になったのだとか。

583系に思い入れはないですが、この特異な方向幕のデザインが好きすぎて購入してしまいました。

特殊な方向幕の構造が災いしているのか、表示枠は20コマ（うち２コマは使用不可）しか用意されていません。そのため「回送」や「団体」といったコマは、末期になり、運用が手薄になるまでそもそも収録されていませんでした。このコマは583系全盛期の内容ですので、当然そういったコマはありません。
さらに20コマでは枠が足りないため、一部の列車については両方向の行き先を記して、進行方向の矢印で案内するような、横着極まりないコマもあります。

内容について。先述の通り多彩な運用に付けるよう設計されているので、九州と関西・中部を結ぶ寝台列車のほか、関西・中部～北陸を結ぶ特急列車、九州内完結の特急列車の行き先が収録されています。
日中はふつうの特急として走り、夜間は都市間を結ぶ夜行列車として運転されていた往時がうかがえますね。

列車の紹介
有明（ありあけ）・・・博多・小倉～大分・鹿児島方面を結ぶ特急列車
明星（みょうじょう）・・・九州と関西を結んでいた寝台列車
雷鳥（らいちょう）・・・関西と北陸を結んでいた特急列車。現「サンダーバード」
なは・・・関西と鹿児島を結んでいた寝台列車
金星（きんせい）・・・中部と九州を結んでいた寝台列車
彗星（すいせい）・・・関西と大分方面を結んでいた寝台列車
しらさぎ・・・中部と北陸を結ぶ特急列車

This is one of my collection of the train rollsign on the 583 series train of the Japan National Railway (present as JR groups).

583 series train was started to introduce in 1967 by Japan National Railway. The most important feature of this train is the structure of its seats. They can be pulled out and used as a foldable sleeper; this means that the 583 series train can be operated as a regular limited express train in the daytime, and run throughout the night as a sleeper train.

The cabin rooms are extended as large as possible so that customers can be relaxed in sleeper-train mode. Due to the structure, there are no much space for destination signs, unique square rollsign was introduced on this train.

Introduction of trains shown on the rollsign:
Ariake … regular limited express train. Hakata/Kokura – Oita/Kagoshima
Myojo … sleeper train. Connects Kyushu district – Kansai district
Raicho … regular limited express train. Osaka – Hokuriku district. The limited express train on the same route is still operated and it is currently named as “Thunderbird”.
Naha … sleeper train. Connects Kagoshima – Kansai district
Kinsei … sleeper train. Connects Kyushu district – Chubu district
Suisei … sleeper train. Connects Oita, Kyushu – Kansai district
Shirasagi … regular limited express train. Connects Chubu district – Hokuriku district
