Today I walked from Lumphini Park, Bangkok’s most famous park, to check out the sky walk to Benjakitti Forest Park. I was joined for an epic street food picnic by friend and fellow YouTuber @Joe Parrilla

First stop was Soi Polo for some Michelin-recommended fried chicken at Polo Fried Chicken (ไก่ทอดเจ๊กี)

We picked up Gai Yang ไก่ย่าง – 130 THB (half) £3.00 / $3.67

Directions and opening times:

Next we walked to an ancient noodle stall

We grabbed some Bammee Haeng or dry noodles – 50 THB £1.20 / $1.35

Next we headed up soi 4 for som tum with crab – 30 THB £0.72 / $0.80

We also grabbed some grilled chicken and som tum Thai from Uncle Sriyan – 90 THB £2.15 / $2.40

I personally think that Benjakitti Park is a much more interesting park than Lumphini Park. What do you guys think?

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this YouTube channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!

I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.

If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

  1. I have been enjoying your videos, but my partner really admired your shoes in todays video, did you pick them up in Bangkok? Do you remember where, we will be there in November. Thank you

  2. Once again, you hit it on the nail; it's not just about the food, its getting out there with the people who live there, whose livings depend on making the dishes, and the whole experience. You said some more that was really on point, but this is just another video that proves why I enjoy them all. Of course, I don't think of those older neighborhood homes you mentioned as "ramshackle", they're just where people live, and they look good to me. And, yes, that papaya salad was my first experience of making Thai food (and that was in Hawaii before I had ever been to Bangkok and Thonburi back in the day). Keep up the good work, Gary. One of these days I'll have the means to actually join, and front you a couple of Singh Ha's.

  3. going there in 2 weeks after a 2 1/2 hiatus due to Covid. living in Indonesia, it is a week end getaway. That walk and the skywalk are definitely on the list for an early breakfast before the eat of the day kicks in. thanks mate

  4. Nobody on Youtube rolls their R's as good as you. 😉 Can we talk about fish balls? You don't eat them (ok now I'm scared). What exactly is in them?

  5. I totally agree with you Gary. You dont always need the Best food. Its the places, athmosphere, People and company that makes it special. And that is what we are waiting for so much!! And In January it happens again😀🤟🇹🇭

  6. Super super video Gary. I have walked the "green mile" but never ventured off. Next time we're in Bangkok I definitely will explore the little soi's more 👍

  7. I visited the park today and LOVED it. Great video and next time I go I’ll be sure to plan enough time for some chicken on the side streets.

  8. I really have to stop watching your videos first thing in the morning because now I’m absolutely starving! Oh, and POOR you having so many exciting food options! 😂😂😂
Another great video. Thanks Gary! Will check out your buddy’s channel.

  9. Loved the video, Gary. Big fan of your channel and Joe's. You two are duo gold by the way (!) – if I was a documentary casting director I'd sign you both up – your styles complement each other perfectly. Awesome stuff!

  10. Polo fried chicken, and whatever else looks good from the neighborhood and a walk and picnic in the park will definitely be an afternoon outing for our next Bangkok trip. More neighborhood walks and food adventures would be fun to see

  11. Gary super great vlog. The venue of the parks just perfect! I will be living there in two months, between the two parks~!😊 You have a invite, lunch or dinner sometime.Try some restaurants and holes in the wall place that I like. 😊you and I are both foodies! 😁

  12. Just started watching your channel & I'm really enjoying it; your Thai is also good too…..👍my Thai is very limited & like to pick up words especially when they are from English tongue, I'm curious, did you say Mie ow sook? which you would say if you didn't want your fried egg overdone lol to the noodle vendor? Or Mie ow soup? & Nam Tok to boat noodle vendor? Nam Tok in Thai is raining, does it mean other words too? 🤔

  13. The fascination of Bangkok. Skyscrapers, high-rises and just around the corner you can have traditional old-style neighbourhoods. And great food for picnic 😆 Enjoy😍

  14. I'm Thai. All Thai people welcome tourists of all nationalities and religions, no matter who you are, where you come from, if you come to travel with quality, respect Thai people, respect Thailand. Thai people will help each other to maintain the good trust of tourists. Help each other to provide good service to tourists in a friendly manner. Smile, cheerful, peaceful, safe, clean, equal for all classes. Thailand also has many interesting places to explore. Suitable for tourists of all levels of your hopes. We can definitely welcome everyone with the best willingness for sure.

  15. In the 70’s my sister and I used to go to the Polo club at the end of the Soi to ride horses and hang out at their pool. It was a horse riding club and I believe the old farts of the time played polo before elephant polo became big in Hua Hin. I think that’s why the Soi was named Soi Polo, I never thought anything of it…It was down the street from the Witthayu Police station and always busy with cars from aristocratic Thais taking their children for the club experience. It was absorbed into RBSC in the late 70’s and I think remains to this day in the same location.

  16. Great to see a lesser explored area (for you) on your channel, duchess. Had a giggle at your rubber band trauma at 21:40 😂 You always carry a purse 👀 with you, you could just bring something sharp to open bags quickly 👍

  17. Just walked all the way from asok to polo fried chicken just to see it being closed for the vegetarian festival. Starting to dislike the vegans even more 😉 just kidding. Sweating balls. But its a good workout and it's nice to walk through all the alleyways

  18. คุณกินรสชาติเผ็ดเก่งมากค่ะ👍
