10. New York City, US
As the most expensive metropolis in the US, New York City is head and shoulders above the competition. The metropolis, which has around 8.8 million people, also ranks among the most expensive cities to live in in the world. The cost of living in Manhattan is 154 percent more than the national average, a staggering disparity.
Homes in Manhattan cost more than $1 million. Everything, from groceries to public transit, is more expensive in New York City than elsewhere. As of December 2020, the unemployment rate in the city was 11.6 percent, which was a modest improvement over the previous month. The cost of renting a two-bedroom flat in New York is the third-highest globally.
9. Osaka, Japan
The Japanese city of Osaka has surpassed many other cities as one of the most expensive places to live in the world. Even within Japan, Osaka moved three points from the last ranking position to the top of the present one while Tokyo advanced five spots to the eighth position, both due to the strengthening of the yen against the US dollar.
8. Honolulu, US
Residents of Honolulu are forced to pay a high price for almost everything. Groceries are around 70.9 percent more expensive than the national average while utilities are approximately 101.2 percent more expensive. Despite this, salaries are not significantly higher to make up for it. In Honolulu, the typical household income is $84,328. However, while this is more than the national median income of $63,200, it is significantly lower than the median income of $110,500 in San Francisco.
If you intend to reside in Honolulu, you should be prepared to pay extra for personal products where a dozen eggs cost $2.87 as opposed to $1.27 in Iowa.
7. Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen, the capital of Demark, is an expensive city to live in, especially in the summer months. There is an acute shortage of properties available for rent. Even if you manage to find one, you will be expected to pay a substantial two or even three months’ rent as a deposit before you can move in.
If you want to live in one of Copenhagen’s hippest neighborhoods, such as Nrrebro or Vesterbro, you could expect to pay at least 500 Euros each month for a single room. Starting at 1,600 Euros, costs for a medium-sized flat in a neighborhood near the city center are reasonable. Grocery shopping is also not inexpensive. Look at it from whatever angle, you too will find a justification for the inclusion of Copenhagen in the list of 10 most expensive cities to live in the world.
6. Geneva, Switzerland
The cost of living in Switzerland is well-known for being extremely expensive. Although Switzerland’s scenic Alpine lifestyle, political and economic stability, great healthcare, and high standard of living are all desirable, they are not without a cost. So much so that three Swiss towns – Zurich (fourth), Bern (eighth), and Geneva (ninth) – appeared prominently on Mercer’s list of the world’s most expensive cities in 2020.
Research published by Mercer in 2020 classified Geneva as the world’s fourth-most expensive city, and it was also the most expensive city in Europe. According to online cost surveyors, Geneva has the highest expenses for meals at a low-cost restaurants, fitness clubs, imported beer, and taxis. The overall cost of living in Geneva is 71 percent higher than that of Brussels in Belgium and 64 percent more expensive than that of Munich in Germany. That is why the city can find its way into our list as the 6th of the 10 most expensive cities to live in.
