First time I’ve seen the Northern Lights from the cab in August!
Seeing the Northern lights in August is quite rare this far south in Norway. But lately the activity has been pretty crazy with the “the lights” being visible almost every day.

On this trip we start off in Bergen where I have to pic up the train at an unusual location and move it to the terminal so it can be loaded with freight. Since this is a Sunday the freight volume is quite low. Bergen is undergoing massive changes these days as they are getting ready to couple the old, and refurbished, Ulriken tunnel to the network. At the same time they are making huge changes to the freight terminal with longer tracks, parking areas for trains and, the most important point, the possibility to depart directly from the terminal track. This will make it so much more easier and more effective. But we will still have to do the go-around on arrival so we get the loco in the correct end. Hehe.

Other moments in this video is the signalling failure between Voss and Reimegrend causing massive delays throught the network. Those delays changes where we meet trains in the opposite direction. In this case I used this chance to fill up my thermos with Covfefe at Voss.

This trip also show a really close call with a beautiful stag just after Geilo.

ENJOY!

  1. Those were amazing… living in South Florida, I never get to see the lights. Rocket launches make up for a lot of it though… 🙂

  2. Marvelous! If I had a waiting room in a doctor's office, or auto repair – or anywhere I didn't want to have to wait in a room with others, I'd have this on full screen! Everyone would be mesmerized they'd hate to stop waiting! (OMG your pause in Voss for a thermos refill was priceless!) … Had to stop there to comment so far. Anxious now to see the rest! Fantastic job RCG!!! ❣

  3. Hi, I was just wondering can you add the outside temperature on you’re video’s ,so those of us down under can really appreciate how cold you’re country is especially in the winter months?

  4. Norway is so gorgeous. I never get tired of these well-made videos. RailCowGirl is #1 all the way! I'm so proud and happy to be a subscribed member. 😊😊😊😊😊

  5. How far into the spur line Havnesporet do you drive when parking trains? Do you get to see the daylight from the other opening?

  6. Thank you for dimming your lights at 3:52:45. Doing so gave us a better chance of seeing the Lights from your point of view. I live on the 38th parallel in North America. We never see the Aurora Borealis unless the sun was to do something absolutely crazy!

  7. Everything there is so beautiful and clean. I can almost see myself in a cabin on a river in the mountains with a lake nearby being very happy. I do not want to get married but Maybe a wife and a couple kids running around driving us crazy. Like watching Thank You RailCowGirl 😇

  8. Thanks the video! Very good. It would have been nice to see the engine room and the starting of the diesel.

  9. Do you know why all these caves are at the left side of the Finsetunnel. Some are bigger than others they also are in other tunnels

  10. This solar cycle is coming in quite a bit above the last cycle. The current activity levels are similar to the peak of the last cycle in 2014, and if it is a normal length cycle there are about 3 years to go to maximum. So I expect there will be quite a bit more aurora over the next few years.
I wonder what it would have been like in 1957 which was the biggest maximum on record.

P.S. I think the stag knew what it was doing with the timing.

  11. Superb vid as always. I've never understood the signals there. What's the purpose of having 2 solid greens over 1 flashing green and then 1 flashing yellow to a flashing red. Does this indicate the same as green to yellow (caution) to a red. I got further confused when there was a diverging route but I finally figured out the flashing white lights are for the crossings.

  12. Grats on being in devin's latest song! Great to see the collab after hearing him talking about how having you on in the background helped him

  13. Hi 🙂 Random question. Is that some of your footage being used in Call Of The Void by Devin Townsend? If it is, well done for contributing to an excellent song. Love your channel by the way.

  14. I agree with all regarding the beauty of the footage. With the northern lights, it's a piece of art. But hey, RCG, thanks for the humorous moment at the Bergen platform. I thought "what…?!? getting on the Bergensbanen, and not as a passenger??" until that big grin popped up.

  15. RailCowGirl, if I understand correctly you drive this route every few days. And yet, I can understand that this is not something you can be tired of. The scenery is so beautiful, with changing weather and seasons, light and dark, that each time you drive it is a new experience. And the tunnels have their own magic. Great to watch.
(Only drawback, maybe: they seem to be building more and more light metal tunnels in the higher areas, which reduces the views. Is that because of the snow, to minimise the need to clear the track?)

  16. Didn't have the time when it came out, but your latest excellent video didn't disappoint, either. Beautiful colours in all weather, time of day or season (and we had multiples of each of those in this video).

I noticed that the view is now as smooth as when you drove passenger trains. Did you use some kind of stabiliser? (Sorry if I missed an announcement to that effect.)

  17. Awesome video and really gr8 camera brings excellent night picture! As for northern lights I also heard Sami legend saying that when winter fox go hunting, she sweep snowflakes from the hills with her bushy tail. And these flakes are shining during the long winter nights. Thats why Sami called northern lights with a word: "Revontulet" which means "Fox Lights".

  18. Aurora borealis? At this time of year? At this time of day? In this part of the country? Localized entirely within your train cab?

  19. I was relaxing to the images and sound and then suddenly ads disturbing everything please don't do it 😒☹😟😕
